Go green - energy saving tips

  • Don't throw away: give away instead! Mobile phones, computers, printer cartridges, clothes and books can all find happy homes away from the landfill site.
  • Don't over fill kettles - only boil as much water as you need.
  • When buying products that use energy, such as fridge freezers or light bulbs, look for an Energy Rating of A or higher.
  • When the weather is fine, hang your clothes out to dry instead of using the tumble dryer.
  • Make sure that you recycle household waste. Use the recycling bins provided by the Council to dispose of your waste responsibly.
  • Try collecting rainwater in rainwater butts and use the water collected for the garden and the plants during the summer months.
  • Wait until you have a full load before using your washing machine and whenever possible use the 30° cycle.
  • Remember to turn the tap off when brushing your teeth, shaving or having a wash. This could save up to 6 litres of water per minute!
  • Don’t waste energy by leaving electrical items - particularly TV's, DVD players, phone chargers and games consoles - on standby mode.
  • Use energy efficient light bulbs - they last up to ten times longer than ordinary light bulbs and can save up to £60 per bulb in electricity over their lifetime.
  • When winter is on it's way, make sure you use your heating efficiently. Reducing room temperature by just one degree could cut you heating bills by up to 10%.
  • Ditch the disposables! Try to buy reusable products, such as rechargeable batteries, instead.
